Hello World

“Ah … ! What’s happening? it thought.
Er, excuse me, who am I?
Hello?
Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?
What do I mean by who am I?
Calm down, get a grip now … oh! This is an interesting sensation, what is it?”
Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

An amusing quote preceding unfortunate events. Let’s hope that is not foreshadowing this blog’s fate.

So… Who am I? My name is Alan, but that is not who I am, but merely my name. I could tell you about my career, about where I live, that I’m awful with words (but I’m working on it), and that my personality type is mostly a INTJ-T. These are all portions of me, but I do not think of them as a description of who I am. I am a father first and a Dungeon Master (DM) second. My wife might sometimes disagree with that statement, but I consider it to be more true than false.

Well, enough about me, and more about this blog thing. I have been kicking the idea of writing on what it is like to be a DM and a father for awhile now. To be both is to attempt to have your cake and eat it too. This is because being a parent means that every waking moment not at work usually involves spending time with your family. As you probably know already, being a DM has extensive time demands, especially if the campaign that you are using is your own creation. So I have taken the plunge! Prepare to read lots about my son, my experiences as a DM, and how I balance this with also keeping a full-time job and finding time to write. I plan to post every Thursday and as a warning this blog will probably get sidetracked once in awhile, and may eventually become something more. I hope you enjoy the posts and insights I provide in this blog as I figure out what I want it to become. This week’s post is short and sweet, but next week I will start diving into the “meat and potatoes” as it were.
